Overview

Sibiu Cycling Tour

The Sibiu Cycling Tour is a multi-day men's stage race held each summer in Romania's Transylvania region. Based around the medieval city of Sibiu, the race typically runs four days and attracts a mix of continental teams and development squads looking for stage-race experience in varied terrain.

Since its debut in 2011, the Sibiu Cycling Tour has quickly become one of the most competitive stage races in Eastern Europe.

Why this race matters

This is one of the few stage races on the continental calendar that rewards genuine climbing ability without requiring WorldTour firepower. The roads around Sibiu rise and fall through forested valleys and open ridgelines, and the race usually includes at least one summit finish that separates the climbers from the rest. It's a proving ground for younger riders building stage-race craft, and the racing tends to be open and tactical rather than controlled.

Route DNA

The race is built around the geography of the Carpathian foothills, with stages that typically include rolling valley roads, short punchy climbs, and at least one longer summit finish that decides the general classification. The terrain is rarely flat, so positioning and recovery between stages matter as much as peak climbing power. Time gaps tend to open on the summit finishes, but the rolling stages can also shed riders who struggle with repeated accelerations. Expect the GC to be shaped by one or two decisive climbing stages, with the rest of the race testing consistency and tactical awareness. Breakaways often succeed on transitional stages, and the final day can still reshuffle the top five if the route includes late climbing.
