Japan Cup 2026 Preview: 14 Laps of Mt. Kogashi and Asia's Premier One-Day Race

Japan Cup 2026 covers 144 km over 14 laps of the Mt. Kogashi circuit. The repeated climbing creates progressive attrition in Asia's biggest one-day road race.

The Japan Cup returns to the iconic Mt. Kogashi circuit built for the 1990 UCI Road World Championships. Lenny Martinez won the 2025 edition with a solo attack on the final climb, beating Alex Baudin and Ion Izagirre, while Neilson Powless took the 2024 title with a similar late-race move. The 14 laps of 10.3 kilometers create progressive attrition: early laps thin the field gradually, and the decisive moves come in the final two or three circuits when cumulative climbing fatigue meets tactical urgency. The race draws a strong international field to Tochigi Prefecture each October, and the World Championship circuit pedigree gives it a legitimacy few one-day races outside Europe can match.

2026 outlook

The 2026 Japan Cup sends riders around 14 laps of the Mt. Kogashi circuit in Utsunomiya, covering 144 kilometers with 185 meters of climbing per lap. The repeated circuit format progressively strips away riders and rewards those who can read the race across multiple laps and respond to decisive moves on the final ascent.
