Stage 5 of the 2027 Tour de France runs 178 km from Pontorson to Plumelec on Wednesday, July 7, and ends on a short climb that the riders take twice. The stage is hilly, with about 1,900 meters of climbing.
Pontorson, a first-time stage town, sits at the edge of the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. The race follows the bay for about 10 km before it turns inland through Pleine-Fougères, Combourg, Bécherel and Saint-Méen-le-Grand to Ploërmel and Sérent.
The finish is the Côte de Cadoudal, 1.7 km at 6.2 percent. The peloton climbs it once, rides a final loop of about 13 km and climbs it again; the second ascent runs straight to the line, with no descent after the top. A group that gets clear on the first passage can be hard for the sprinters’ teams to bring back.
Plumelec last finished a Tour road stage in 2008, when Alejandro Valverde won stage 1 from Brest. In 2015 BMC won the stage 9 team time trial there by one second from Sky, and in 2025 Marianne Vos won the opening stage of the Tour de France Femmes, from Vannes.
