“The team time trial has always been one of the most exciting and spectacular formats in cycling,” race director Marion Rousse said when the plan was announced in April. The official race account describes a time trial among London’s landmarks.

With no individual time trial in the 2027 race, this is the only stage against the clock, and the gaps it creates come from team strength more than from any one rider. Movistar’s Cat Ferguson, from Yorkshire, described the prospect as a “full circle moment.”

The race crosses the Channel the next day. Stage 4 starts in Le Touquet-Paris-Plage on Monday, August 2.
