The course is a lap of the lake. It starts at the town hall of Annecy and follows the west shore through Sévrier, Saint-Jorioz and Duingt to Doussard, where the first time check comes after 16.9 kilometers. It returns along the east shore, and the first 25 kilometers have little climbing. The one climb is the Côte de Talloires, 1.5 kilometers at 6.5 percent, with its top about 10 kilometers from the finish at Le Pâquier in Annecy.

The Tour de France held a time trial around the same lake in 2009. Alberto Contador won it by three seconds over Fabian Cancellara after 40.5 kilometers.

Remco Evenepoel has won the last four world titles, from Glasgow in 2023 to Montréal in 2026. In Montréal he beat Filippo Ganna by 57 seconds. In Kigali in 2025 he caught and passed Tadej Pogačar on the road, and Pogačar finished fourth. Evenepoel also won the time trial of the 2026 Tour de France from Évian-les-Bains to Thonon-les-Bains, in the same department, with Pogačar second. Fabian Cancellara and Tony Martin won this title four times each. A fifth would put Evenepoel alone ahead of them.

Ganna, the champion of 2020 and 2021, was second in Zürich in 2024 by six seconds and second again in Montréal. Paul Seixas took the bronze medal in Montréal at 19, 1 minute 13 seconds behind Evenepoel, and rides at home in 2027. Brandon McNulty was fourth there and Isaac del Toro sixth.

The under-23 men and women ride the same course a day earlier, and the mixed relay uses it on Thursday, September 2.
