Pau is the Tour’s best-known Pyrenean town. Its tourist office says only Paris and Bordeaux have hosted the race more often, and Olav Kooij won there most recently, on stage 5 of the 2026 Tour from Lannemezan.

Muret has been the start of a Pyrenean stage before: in 2021 stage 17 left Muret for the Col du Portet, where Tadej Pogačar won, and in 2015 stage 13 left it for Rodez. The Portet is the finish of the next stage.

The teams of the overall contenders will want a quiet day. The sprinters’ teams have their own reason to keep it that way: after Pau only one flat stage remains before Paris.

Start: Muret

Muret, on the Garonne south of Toulouse, is where the Battle of Muret was fought on September 12, 1213, and where the aviation pioneer Clément Ader was born. Stages started here in 2015, 2021 and 2025.

Finish: Pau

Pau, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, is the Tour's classic gateway to the Pyrenees. Henri IV was born in its château in 1553, and the Boulevard des Pyrénées looks across the range. Its tourist office counts it as the third most frequent host of the Tour, after Paris and Bordeaux.
