Domestique Cycling calls it a transitional stage, with the sprinters and the breakaway riders fighting for the win. For the overall contenders the job is to stay out of trouble on rolling, twisting roads; for the sprinters it is one of the last chances of the Tour.

Libourne has hosted a stage finish before: Matej Mohorič won there in 2021, on stage 19 from Mourenx. In 2023 stage 8 started in the town and Mads Pedersen won in Limoges. Libourne also hosted time trial finishes in 1957 and 1992.

Paris is the next day.

Start: Maubourguet

Maubourguet is a small town on the Adour in the Hautes-Pyrénées, in the old County of Bigorre, where the roads from Auch to Pau and from Bordeaux to Tarbes cross. Stage 19 of the 2014 Tour started here, and Ramūnas Navardauskas won in Bergerac.

Finish: Libourne

Libourne, in the Gironde, is a wine town where the Isle meets the Dordogne, next to Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. Matej Mohorič won stage 19 here in 2021, and the next day's time trial started in Libourne and finished in Saint-Émilion, which Wout van Aert won.
